Saya Gray – SAYA

Post by Misha //
I saw this album described somewhere as “magpie pop,” which I think we can all agree is the correct way. A collection of shiny, odd objects. Each perfectly chosen and perfectly loved. Perfect for the way they look woven together with the sticks and the twigs, sparkling in the sun and the flash of wings.
Though the ideal genre descriptor has already be found, here are a few runner-up ideas:
Enchanted forest pop. The kind with talking birds and squirrels and also a witch’s house and also the faint echo of screams.
Helicopter twang.
Alt-country of the elven variety.
Those videos of people putting like hot dogs and cereal and whole shrimps into a mold and then filling it with a resin and in the end it becomes like a table or a sculpture or something and it’s weirdly the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen. But in song form.
Soundtrack that plays over the credits of the simulation.
Dream logic pop.
Indie rock for the way a rock looks sinking to the bottom of the pond and also for the ripples it makes and the way the ripples make the clouds look almost exactly like a malfunctioning VHS tape.
I wish that I had more intelligent things to say about this album, honestly. It’s been a while since anything has pushed quite so many of my buttons quite so thoroughly and all at the same time. But I’m tired because I just watched a bunch of videos of people putting various food items in resin and now I have to go to bed. Please listen to this excellent album.
