TUNES // Kythira – My Name
Post by Misha
there’s something about bedroom pop, and particularly this kind of bedroom pop, that paints the world in wes anderson hues. not in a kitschy way, though. it’s about creating a place where everything can happen for the very first time, again.
that’s what draws me in, that sense of precious and utter timelessness. the mapping out a way to revisit simplicity when things are no longer simple. trying to recreate the first bite of fresh spun sugar, not just the sweetness of it but the feeling of it melting away.
there’s a line in this song about summer camp and suddenly i can see the bunk house where i spent my first summer stint away from home. i can see the initials scratched in the picnic tables, and hear the lilt of canoe paddles sloshing across the lake.
it’s nostalgic, but it’s better than mere remembering. it is something in the muted patter of the computer generated drum beat. the melody has wings that flutter, and so does the memory. the water and the trees and the blackened marshmallows, and when they fly away it is music.
nothing is trapped in past tense or heartbreak here. though that may well be where it hails from, it arrives pared down and free, light on its feet, quick, new, and honest.
‘My Name’ is the first single from Kythira‘s upcoming album, Cut Through. Buy it here via Healthy Tapes, out on May 30th.
