TUNES // La Timpa – Blue Animal
The drum machine is like the hydraulic gasp of an oxygen tank on this one. Something rationing survival.
I know you want to hold me.
Sorry, I’ve got to stay out of love.
I’ve been sitting on this track for a while, never sure what to write about how hopeless and perfect it is. It is a chant and a drone and a mantra. I often listen to it when I forget how to be properly hollowed out; it always helps.
I want to watch the sun come up to this song. I want to grow old and gnarled to this song. I want to wander through empty streets, I want to watch something burn, I want to come up empty to this song.
It is savagely desolate – all the spaces between you and everyone you’ve ever loved collected and brought together into one cavernous room; echoes of loneliness bouncing around but never quite touching.
And the video. The video is perfect. There is a shot where a young girl stares into the camera and reaches down to scratch an itch on her leg underneath layers of thrift store nylon and polyester. It makes me feel intense sadness and I have absolutely no idea why. That’s art though, right?
