ALBUM // Sneaks – Highway Hypnosis
Highway Hypnosis starts on a long lens. A 1975 Mustang growling through the desert at night. A speck on the horizon. Growing larger and coming into and out of focus with each passing second. The air is cold and buzzing.
From there everything is on a slow and vertigo-like zoom, pushing in close to each uncomfortable detail and then pulling out quickly, letting molten edges of the world redefine themselves disorientingly according to the mercurial rules of a constantly changing physics. Everything pulls along the axis of the next beat.
Each song is neatly contained and otherworldly. None pass the 3-minute mark. They blip in and out of existence unexpectedly and change direction frequently, like the world dancing shakily in the beam of a flashlight.
By the end of the journey it is unclear if we’ve moved at all. This is a profoundly scrambling, danceable, confusing, catchy, dark, shiny, spacious 28 minutes of music.
