Sitting there until the knot becomes a metaphor for life or something and how tightly it’s wound up in itself, how little air there is between one thing and another. Until one loop comes loose and all of a sudden it looks more like a roller coaster, the kind from when we were kids at a cheap carnival in the fairground parking lot. Dirty and questionable and fun. And then the whole thing comes tumbling out and the laces stretch lazily like the hills in the neighborhood behind the Vons, quiet streets with smooth sidewalks, perfect for high downhill speeds.
