TUNES // The Beaches – Money

There’s something very Strokes-y about this music. There’s no getting around it, we might as well come out and say it. On “Money” the influence of “Reptilia” is damn near unmistakable. (While we’re at it I’ll also say that historically I’ve not been The Strokes’ biggest supporter. They have the best luck with me when I’m very stoned or when it’s early in the morning and I’m in the mood to wreak havoc. So as far as I’m concerned The Beaches have one large advantage over The Strokes right off the bat which is that Julian Casablancas is not their singer. That is my main beef with The Strokes. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.)

But the other commonality between The Beaches and The Strokes is this feeling that their music produces, like basically from the first chord. This feeling of incredulousness, almost, that a piece of music exists that so perfectly executes what it sets out to do. Kind of like seeing one of those street performers who paint themselves up like statues, and you almost walk right by because they really do look like a statue. But then at the last minute they make some tiny almost imperceptible movement and you have to stop, no matter where you’re going or what you’re late for, and watch them stand absolutely still.

Being so good at something that’s so simple, and so elusive. That’s rock n roll, right?
