EP // Leikeli47 – Pick A Color
I have intentionally not read any of the interviews in which Leikeli47 provides insight into why she chooses to wear a mask while performing. I guess because the secrecy seems like the power, like it would take something away to know it.
Masks can function as a blank canvas onto which to project our own faces, with all their insecurities and secrets; so too can unanswered questions about the masked artist inspire a sort of self-reflection in their listener that becomes an integral part of the music itself.
I don’t know why Leikeli wears it, but on Pick A Color (stream below) the mask lends a superheroish quality to her persona. As an artist she is confident, brash, explosive. Each song swoops in to save us from the unexceptional.
Pick A Color follows Leikeli47‘s sophomore album, last year’s Wash & Set and is the first look at her upcoming album, Acrylic (out next month). Though short, the collection soars through playfulness, triumph, and growling tragedy, hitting high highs and low lows with razor sharp insightfulness. Buy Pick A Color here.
