Every morning when I walk to work I step over two names etched into the curb in front of the yogurt shop next to the office. First names; Dawn and Don, encircled in a heart. Right there next to the stars on the outskirts of the Walk Of Fame, the ones the tourists always pause to look at with knots in their faces, leaning over to ask each other, “Who was that? Do you know?”

I’ve never written my name in a bathroom stall. Once my ex boyfriend etched our initials into the trunk of a eucalyptus tree in Griffith Park but he wasn’t very serious about it and the last time I looked for it it was gone, which I suppose is just as well. I do sometimes wonder if Don or Dawn had the right idea, though, writing their names in the streets and in the reflections of the skyscraper windows looking down on them. Because I mean if you don’t do it who else will, right?
