TUNES // Shocking Blue – Venus
Post by Misha
She found comfort in thinking about herself as a thing in cocoon. You know, transforming. She had given up long ago any expectation that it might actually happen – in fact, she was finding more and more that where the aspirational butterfly used to be a more grown up version of herself, the creature now seemed to have veered away from the world of possible outcomes and rather existed in a parallel, alternate reality. Or, somewhat worse, was nothing more than a wishfully augmented memory of her younger years. The years which, she supposed, the supposed metamorphosis would have taken place, if it was going to have.
It didn’t make her sad though. Not any more than the broken promises of Disney princes or Hollywood nightclubs anyway. She expected that in the real world the butterfly would have problems too. Disappointing dates. Recurring plumbing problems. Eczema. Something like that. Probably best the transformation happen only in small moments, a little at a time, and fleetingly, like in the car tumbling along a string of green lights, or after a perfectly delivered punchline.
This song played in Trader Joes tonight. Everyone I passed was singing it absentmindedly as they shopped, each having our own private Venus moment.
