The difference between need and want is not as simple as your kindergarten teacher made it sound.

“No, you need food, clothes, and water. You want to play with the fire truck.”

But look at you now, learning it the hard way. Whittling down the list of things that you really need. Things you’ve discovered not by choice but by necessity.

“No, you need love, friendship, and a strong cup of coffee in the morning. You want that girl from the show.”

It’s tough though, still. No matter how many times you write it on the back of your hand.

Black Belt Eagle Scout is the moniker of Katherine Paul, a member of the Swinomish tribe, who explains, “having this identity—radical indigenous queer feminist—keeps me going. My music and my identity come from the same foundation of being a Native woman.”

Soft Stud, originally released by Good Cheer Records out of Portland, is the first track from Black Belt Eagle Scout‘s debut LP, Mother of My Children, out next month on Saddle Creek. Preorder here.
