Haunting, plinky piano notes open Jim James’ fatalistic anthem. The second single from his brand new sophomore album, Eternally Even, “Here In Spirit” sets the stage for a record that’s moody, thoughtful, and more than a little tortured. Though on its surface, there’s a plush velvet sheen to this tune that suggests bygone eras, my favorite moment is an unexpected and all-too-brief glitchy breakdown towards the end of the song, a reminder of James’ innovative musicianship and a fitting close to a song about life’s unpredictability.
