Júníus Meyvant’s soft island-sunset-percussion and richly orchestrated folk-soul seem a bit mismatched to the chilly beauty of his native Iceland. Then again, Iceland seems to be having something of a soul revival thing – the sweeping success of fellow Nordic fellows Kaleo comes to mind – and the harmonies of the American south have found a welcoming, if unexpected, home in the far north.
“Mighty Backbone” is a full, no-holds-barred soul tune. The kind that’ll put a smile on even the groggiest of Monday mornings.
