Despite seeing the plaintive eyes of M.C. Taylor’s new album cover staring at me out of what seemed like every music news outlet over the last couple of months, I only last night got around to giving the album a spin.
Heart Like A Levee is Taylor’s sixth studio album and it sees the 40-year-old North Carolina musician exploring themes of aging, family, and success through his blues-infused folk. Members of Bon Iver and Megafaun play on the album, providing the perfect accompaniment for Taylor’s softly world-worn voice.
Every song on the album is unremittingly compelling, but the anguished, delicately strummed title track in particular captured my heart. Listen to “Heart Like A Levee” below. Buy on Bandcamp or iTunes. If you’re around LA, Hiss Golden Messenger will be playing the Bootleg on the 22nd and The Hollywood Bowl on the 23rd with Bon Iver. Otherwise, catch more tour dates here.
