TUNES // Elohim – Hallucinating

One time I took acid and went to Trader Joes, which is something that you should never, ever do. Of all the terrifying things I encountered on my quest for raspberry kombucha, (people, various fruit, small dogs, a checkout clerk with a beard made of insects) the weirdest thing was the music. I think “All You Need Is Love” was playing, but it kept morphing, like my brain couldn’t quite figure out which order to put the notes in. One moment I was hearing a creepy underwater circus tune, the next it was a record playing backwards, then suddenly everything was sped up to double time like a marching band conducted by a crazy person on speed.

The newest single from rising LA indie songstress, Elohim, kind of reminds me of that experience, but in a way less scary way. “Hallucinating” takes a lot of unexpected turns; listening, I often found myself in a new place in the track without quite knowing how we had gotten there. It’s a bold tune, one that could easily venture too far into the surreal, but Elohim pulls it off, her clear, singsongy voice leading the way confidently through the trip and to the other side.

Elohim is on tour now, buy tickets here! You can buy her EP here.
