Vince Staples raps like it’s something he’d stop doing if he could, like he tells himself at the beginning of every bar: “After this verse. After this one we can rest.” But when he gets to the end he always has one more thing to say.
My favorite part of this song comes at the very end. All the elements of the production drop out one by one, a devastating machine growling to its overdue death, until only Vince’s exhausted, exhausting voice remains, drawling out the track’s least convincing line over and over as if out of habit:
“I just wanna live forever. I just wanna live forever. I just wanna live forever. I just wanna… live… forever.”
