Here’s another one from the Noisetrade Bonnaroo sampler. O’Donovan’s voice is breathy and clear at the same time, reminiscent of Alison Krauss in her most wistful moments. It weaves through elusively picked banjo and long fiddle notes, like furls of campfire smoke into a night full of stars. Normally with bluegrass songs, I need a pretty strong chorus to stay engaged, but in Briar Rose, I find myself just wanting to listen to her voice sing a story.
